SAHARA Las Vegas and Grand Sierra Resort and Casino Reno announce Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) Certification
LAS VEGAS / RENO, Nev. (Jan. 19, 2021) – SAHARA Las Vegas and Grand Sierra Resort and Casino Reno (GSR) are proud to announce that both casino-resorts have been awarded official Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) certification by the Western Regional Minority Supplier Development Council (WRMSDC), an affiliate of the National Minority Supplier Development Council.
In accordance with certification guidelines set forth by the National Minority Supplier Development Council, under the ownership of Alex Meruelo, both SAHARA Las Vegas and GSR qualify for this recognition. SAHARA Las Vegas and GSR are the first commercial casino-resorts in the U.S. to receive MBE certification from WRMSDC. With his majority stake in the Arizona Coyotes, Meruelo, who is a first-generation Cuban-American, is also the first Latino owner in the National Hockey League (NHL).
SAHARA Las Vegas and GSR are supportive of the WRMSDC mission to advocate for minority businesses and support supplier diversity efforts among WRMSDC corporate members, government agencies and community organizations. Recognition as MBE-certified businesses is just the latest development in the ongoing evolution of GSR and SAHARA under Meruelo’s ownership. Since purchasing GSR in 2011, Meruelo has invested more than $250 million in renovations to make GSR northern Nevada’s premier gaming-resort. Meruelo began investing another $150 million in transforming SAHARA upon purchasing the iconic Strip resort in 2018.
